Magnolia Avenue Water Main Interconnection

City of Buena Park

Civiltec Engineering, Inc. has completed the design phase of the Water Main Interconnect Project (Magnolia Avenue) for the City of Buena Park, a project aimed at enhancing the city’s water infrastructure by connecting water mains between Buena Park and Fullerton. This milestone marks a significant step towards improving water distribution reliability and efficiency across the region. The project, which commenced in April 2023, involved extensive planning, coordination, and technical expertise, reflecting Civiltec’s commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Throughout the design phase, Civiltec has meticulously carried out several critical tasks. Comprehensive utility research and data collection ensured a thorough understanding of existing infrastructure, while a detailed topographic survey and field investigation were conducted to create accurate base maps and preliminary layouts. Utility coordination played a vital role, with alignment plans shared with utility companies to identify and mitigate potential conflicts. Additionally, pavement rehabilitation plans were reviewed to align with standards from both Buena Park and Fullerton. Specifically, the project affects Magnolia Avenue, with plans to replace approximately 2,000 linear feet of existing water mains with new ductile iron pipes to ensure durability and longevity.

The final design includes the installation of ductile iron pipe, chosen for its strength and resistance to corrosion, as the primary material for the mainline. The design also incorporates the use of off-the-shelf parts for vault components, ensuring ease of maintenance and availability of replacements. A hydraulic pressure-reducing valve and a Sparling magmeter flow meter are included to accurately measure and control water flow. To enhance system monitoring and control, SCADA connectivity has been integrated, allowing for shared signals between the cities of Buena Park and Fullerton.

The success of this project is attributed to the dedicated team at Civiltec Engineering. Led by David H. Song, Principal, and Senior Project Manager, the team comprises staff engineers Alex Mairena, EIT, and Charlie Devine, with permitting handled by Sara Canche. The Electrical Engineering team consists of Heber Torres, PE, Vincent Wong, EIT, and Julie Padilla, while surveying is conducted by Mark Randle. As the project moves into the bidding phase, the efforts of this skilled team ensure that the Water Main Interconnect Project (Magnolia Avenue) will significantly benefit the communities of Buena Park and Fullerton, providing a robust and reliable water infrastructure for years to come.
