Brandi Tamura, EIT

Staff Engineer — Phoenix

Where did you attend college, and what did you study?

Arizona State University, Civil Engineering with a Focus in Sustainable Engineering

What initially drew you to Civiltec, and what aspect of Civiltec has kept you here?

I was drawn to Civiltec for the opportunity to be involved in interesting projects that support our community, and to learn from some great engineers. I enjoy the positive environment and working with fantastic people.

What has been the most notable highlight of the past year?

We were having lunch to celebrate Engineering Week, and a marshmallow fight broke out. It was smashing!

Is there a particular hobby, interest or skill you have that other employees might not know about?

I have a lot of hobbies. A few include hiking, sport climbing, vegetable gardening, watercolor painting, welding, Olympic-style archery, road cycling, and volunteering at Ballet Arizona.

Do you have a favorite type of project and if so, can you please provide an anecdote or example of one?

I enjoy most projects! I do get excited by projects involving the expansion or rehabilitation of existing sites into safer, functional, and more efficient infrastructure. A quick and short example that comes to mind was the design to convert a small wastewater treatment plant that had reached the end of its useful life, into a lift station. The existing wet well, pump, and building were repurposed with some minor adjustments made to the wet well, which reduced demolition and new construction necessary to support the community’s growth. I value opportunities to collaborate with operators and contractors, which can be key to the success of these types of projects.
