Basset Reservoir Recoat
California Domestic Water Company
The Basset Reservoir is owned by the California Domestic Water Company (CDWC) located in El Monte, California. This 5.0 million gallon aboveground steel tank required recoating and some internal upgrades to ensure quality water and safety standards. CDWC awarded Civiltec with this contract and began engineering services in September 2022.
Services included the spot blasting repair of several affected areas on the tank’s shell, sandblasting the tank roof, preparation of exterior steel surfaces, and application of new exterior coating systems. Additional replacements and updates to the shell, roof, vents, covers, drain pipes, piping, ladder, panels, manways, valves, gauge board, and handrails. Additionally, replacement of roof vent screens, nuts, bolts, 48 cathodic protection hand hole covers, 4 new safety tether attachments, and replacing shell tap corp stops. Our team provided the technical specifications and quality assurance engineering to see this project through to construction. We also coordinated with CDWC teams, the City of El Monte, construction observers, and with Crosno Construction, Inc. who oversaw all construction activities.
During the project, our team discovered severe to moderate corrosion on the existing rafters which compromised the future roof structure. As a result, Civiltec prepared a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the existing reservoir.
David Song, PE oversaw this project as project manager. All improvements have been finalized by CDWC.
