Sara Canché
Planning Technician – Monrovia
Where did you attend college, and what did you study?
I attended East Los Angeles City College and studied Business.
What is some of your past experience in the engineering field?
I had no engineering experience when I started back in 1977, but I learned a few things from some of the engineers that worked there. This was before computers and all the plans were drawn by hand with a Leroy Pen set. I learned how to hand draw on mylar. That was exciting.
What drew you to working for Civiltec? What do you like best about working at Civiltec (so far)?
I used to work with Rick Shroads at another Engineering firm back in 1977. In 1993 Civiltec’s Planning Technician Ruth was leaving on maternity leave and not coming back. I was called by Joe Valenti, an ex Civiltec employee to see If I wanted to work for Rick. So here I am 26 years later. You get really close to your co-workers and you become family. You work better in a happy, peaceful environment and working at Civiltec makes me happy.
What are some of your favorite types of projects to work on? What are you most excited to tackle?
The majority of my work is doing utility research which has become easier with all the on-line information. But now working at the City of Beverly Hills Water Resources Division, I’m dealing with customers requesting new water services. So I’m doing something new and different. Driving to the City is a bit of a challenge, but that’s life in California.
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?
I love going to the Huntington Gardens to see the beautiful gardens and museum, it is so peaceful and relaxing. I also like going to Gold’s Gym.
Is there a particular hobby, interest or skill you have that other employees might not know about?
Ball Room Dancing.
