Staff Spotlight: Lisa Wells Celebrates Tenure

Lisa Wells is an Administrative Assistant at Civiltec with nearly 35 years of professional experience and a decade of dedicated service to the firm. She brings a unique blend of operational expertise, environmental knowledge, and creative energy to the team, having worked as both a lab director in wastewater treatment and an office manager for multiple businesses. Known for her versatility and kindness, Lisa is the steady hand behind the scenes who helps keep things running smoothly.

What brought you to Civiltec 10 years ago, and what keeps you inspired to stay?

When I came to Civiltec I had been out of the workforce for several years but I was ready to jump back in. A friend knew most of the Civiltec staff because she had worked with Civiltec professionally. She had nothing but positive things to say. I ambushed Chris Dusza at an APWA Luncheon and the rest is history as they say.

You’ve held several roles throughout your career — from lab director to office manager. What part of your professional journey are you most proud of?

I was once proud of the fact that I had been lab director for the City of Flagstaff. But I’ve watched Civiltec grow from 3 offices to 6. Taking on more responsibilities and the opportunity to assist more people from behind the scenes is even more fulfilling. Knowing that I played even a small role in projects that carry the Civiltec logo makes me feel an even greater sense of pride.

What’s something you’ve learned or experienced at Civiltec that stands out from other places you’ve worked?

Everyone at Civiltec is patient with one another. I’ve witnessed that from management down to staff; from staff to management; and laterally. By nature, I’m typically not a patient person. Civiltec has taught me why patience is a much better alternative.

You’re known for juggling multiple responsibilities — from scheduling to purchasing to contract support. What’s your secret to staying organized and adaptable?

LOL. Staying organized for me is born out of necessity. I used to have a memory like a steel trap. The trap has sprung. I’m forgetful. Organization helps me locate information that I should remember, but must look up. I created habits that help me stay organized and I’m open to new ideas for staying organized. Once organized, I can take on more tasks and help more people. That adaptability is rewarding.

What do you enjoy most about supporting engineering teams behind the scenes?

A rewarding sense of accomplishment.

With all your technical and administrative experience, what advice would you give to someone just starting out in office administration in the AEC industry?

Learning skills is important and comes with time, patience, and experience. The most important advice I would give is to learn people skills. Learn the different personalities and how to positively and effectively interact with people. It’s vital to understand that customer service is in everyone’s job description. Delivering exceptional customer service and having very good people skills are paramount.

You’ve had some incredible life experiences — including learning to operate heavy equipment at age 6! What’s one lesser-known fun fact that still surprises people?

My uncle was an early NASCAR driver. He taught me to drive. I began racing snowmobiles at age 9.

Your labradoodle Gabriel clearly has a special place in your life — what’s your favorite way to unwind with him after work?

Gabriel has his own dog, Nicci. Nicci is an 85 lb. Belgian Malinois. They help me unwind playing outdoors. They enjoy playing frisbee and going for walks. They also love to wrestle and play indoors. I spend time training both. They also love to cuddle with mom.

If you could describe your 10 years with Civiltec in one word or phrase, what would it be — and why?

Pleasant. From the moment I joined Civiltec, I’ve experienced a truly supportive and uplifting workplace culture. Over the years, I’ve found it to be a place where people look out for each other, collaborate openly, and value one another’s contributions. It’s been a decade of professional growth and genuine enjoyment in what I do every day.
