One of Civiltec’s core values is to foster talent. Each summer, the firm takes on a number of interns to achieve this goal while supplementing the team’s increased workload. For Summer 2019, five interns will be supporting the Arizona and California offices!

The Civiltec team is enjoying working with our interns and we look forward to seeing where their career paths lead them.

Jon HoweJon Howe is currently studying Civil Engineering at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Being a native Southern Californian, he was very excited to be working and refining his skills at Civiltec. Since his start in April, he has performed cost estimations, analyzed and updated design plans, written technical memorandums, and engaged in other facets of Civiltec’s processes.

When I am not at work or school, I enjoy surfing, playing board games, and participating in sports. I also became fluent in Russian after living in Moscow for two years.

Josh LamphierJosh Lamphier will be a junior at Northern Arizona University in Fall 2019. He is currently studying civil engineering and learned about Civiltec through Chris Dusza, whose son Nick was his childhood best friend. Since joining the team, Josh has begun learning the types of forms and documents associated with an engineering project and how important they are to the project’s completion.

Some of my favorite types of projects to work on are hands on projects where I can learn from the outcome. I want the projects that I do to help me in my future career as well as give me insight into the job. A fun fact about myself is that I love to ride quads and ATVs whenever I get the chance to, even if it is a hundred something degrees outside.

Tanner HoweTanner Howe returns to Civiltec after interning last summer! He finished his last year of undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University-Idaho in Rexburg, Idaho and earned his degree in Civil Engineering this past April. Over the year, he enjoyed course work in hydraulics, delivered his senior project which included the design of an industrial large field soil adsorption system, and officially registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT). Tanner is planning on pursuing a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley in Fall 2019.

Over the course of the summer, I have had the opportunity to aid in the design of several air strippers. The design process has enhanced my ability to solve problems creatively and effectively. I look forward to applying what I learn here in the field of design to my future academic rigor.

Tim Kwan began his internship with Civiltec in Summer 2018. Over the past year, he has gained a wide knowledge of Innovyze’s Infowater and hydraulic modeling as a whole. One of his favorite projects was working on the Kinneloa Irrigation District Hydraulic Modeling Project, where he was tasked on creating the hydraulic model for this region by using various CAD files. Tim will graduate from Cal Poly Pomona in Spring 2020 with Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

From my academic side, I’ve changed from the Webmaster Position (updating social media) to the President of the Structural Engineering Association of Cal Poly Pomona (SEACPP). I’m ready to lead my club and expand it as much as I can.

Gray GarrisonGray Garrison has been part of the Civiltec team since 2017 and is currently wrapping up his Master’s degree at CSU Los Angeles. He successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and is studying for the EIT and Professional Engineer (PE) certifications. Most recently, Gray has worked on pipeline replacement projects with California American Water as well as a design proposal for the Pomona water reservoir rehabilitation.

I’ve had a chance to do wave sloshing and fire flow calculations, cost estimates, specifications and proposals as well as dive deeper into the intricacies of drafting in AutoCAD. Overall it’s been a great internship – I try to balance completing the day’s tasks while also looking ahead at how each project I get to work on can improve my career development.
