RAYMOND J. BUETTNER III

SENIOR DESIGNER – PRESCOTT

Where did you attend college, and what did you study?
I attended college at Northern Arizona University and graduated in 1995 with a B.S. in Education, English. But, I began at NAU in 1990 studying Civil Engineering.

What drew you to working for Civiltec? What do you like best about working at Civiltec?
Chris Dusza introduced me to Civiltec when I needed a summer job as a teacher. My first summer in 1998, I was a rodman working with the Survey Crew and building the expansion of Iron Springs Road here in Prescott.

After that summer, I started going in to the office on Fridays since the school where I taught was on a four-day school week. I started by running errands for Rick and Chris, and that led to doing some redline drafting. In 2000, I switched careers and started as a Drafter at Civiltec. The rest is history!

What are some of your favorite types of projects to work on?
I really enjoy working on most any project. Land Planning projects are probably the most interesting since they run the full gamut of Civil Engineering: grading and drainage, water, sewer, and street design. I have also really enjoyed designing a few of the parks we’ve had the opportunity to do with the Town of Prescott Valley. Rick and I completed a very simple park (Viewpoint Park) and later I designed a larger synthetic turf soccer/football field, small t-ball fields and a dog park at the Town’s Mountain Valley Park Center.

I’ve also really enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time in the field the last few years where I’ve been able to manage and be a construction inspector for large, multi-million-dollar construction projects. The most interesting to date would be the Shultz Fire Watershed Protection Projects Civiltec was involved in for several years with Coconino County.

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?
When I’m not at Civiltec, I’m typically involved in one of my son’s activities or a multitude of “honey do’s” and house projects. My wife Amy and I have 4 wonderful boys (Toby 15, Cade 13, Micah 11, & Elijah 8) who are all very active with marching band, orchestra, soccer, baseball, gymnastics, basketball, school, and youth activities at our church.

I also have been very active in coaching soccer over the past 10 years and recently just completed the ‘E’ license for FIFA Coaching. Once I’m eligible, I would like to continue to the ‘D’ license. I also assist with my son’s baseball team during the little league season from March – May. I just recently turned the torch over to another dad in our Cub Scout Pack after being the Cub Master for the past four years for Cub Scout Pack 7006, where we had a healthy group of 50+ families involved in Cub Scouting.

Is there a particular hobby, interest or skill you have that other employees might not know about?
I enjoy woodworking, fixing things, the occasional remodel of a room, tiling, painting, etc. I definitely know my limits and will be the first to hire a professional but, for the most part, I would consider myself a bit of a handyman. Most of my hobbies come from the projects I tackle or things my wife dreams up like chickens and chicken coops. I do have to say: the fresh eggs have been nice and I designed and built one heck of a coop. I also enjoy golfing and try to go as much as time allows. At this season in my life, my hobbies have four names: Toby, Cade, Micah, and Eli.
