Civiltec completed the design phase of the Deck Park Tunnel Drainage Improvement Project in the heart of downtown Phoenix earlier this year, and the construction phase is now underway. The main focus of the project is to find a solution to water infiltrating into the tunnel systems, which could cause ventilation or electrical systems to fail and force closure of the tunnel to traffic.
The project improvement area includes the I-10 Deck Park Tunnel, as well as the Japanese Friendship Garden (JFG) and the City of Phoenix Margaret T. Hance Park located above the tunnel. The construction phase includes several key components:
- Subsurface drainage improvements including the replacement of underdrain drainage system near the edges of the tunnel deck
- Subsurface drainage improvements along Deck Joint 17/18, including resealing the joint and improvements to the drainage system above the joint
- Surface drainage improvements along Deck Joint 19/3rd Street bridge, including resealing the joint
- Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) improvements for the drainage system at the tunnel edge underneath the City of Phoenix Burton Barr Library
Civiltec is currently working with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Phoenix Construction District to provide post-design construction services throughout the duration of the Deck Park Tunnel Project. Phase 1 of the project includes the improvements west of Central Avenue, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, and is scheduled for completion no later than August 10, 2015. Phase 2 includes the improvements east of Central Avenue and is scheduled for completion no later than October 30, 2015. Construction remains on a tight schedule so that the Japanese Friendship Garden can reopen in October and the many events throughout Hance Park can occur this Fall as scheduled.
